AA-12 was originally a fully automatic shotgun. I don't know if there is a semi-auto "civilian" version. Real AA-12's are rare and expensive. If your friend is a collector, that would be appropriate, but for home protection...I think it is a bit much. Unless he expects to be attacked by multiple combat assault moose, I think a more practical option (if you want a shotgun) would be a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500. Both are pump shotguns with plenty of aftermarket products available to them...though if you're in Canada you may run into ITAR regulations...

I am not a shotgun fan, especially for home defense. They are much harder to learn to shoot well. While a pump shotgun is very reliable, it can readily fire all kinds of different loads, they can be prone to user errors such as short shucking. So if you want a shotgun for home protection, you really need to commit to training with it. I'm not a fan of the lack of precision a shotgun typically offers. Yeah, you can run slugs, but the recoil hurts and isn't easy to keep follow-up shots on target. Also, If you're shelling out thousands of dollars for an AA-12, you might not have much left for ammo and training...

I'm a big advocate of fullsize 9mm semi-auto handguns for home defense. Modern polymer pistols are kind of the standard these days: Glock 17, S&W M&P 9, Springfield XD series are all great choices. They offer plenty of capacity (does Canada have capacity laws?), options to mount lights and lasers. The 9mm round is cheap to practice with and offers low recoil, making it easier to shoot. These pistols are also relatively in-expensive. The aftermarket for these are also extensive, if that is your thing. Modern bullet technology makes a 9mm self defense round just as effective as any other caliber.

Face it, pistols suck, regardless of caliber. 9mm, .40, .45 - all have anecdotes where an attacker had to be shot multiple times to stop their attack. There is a NY police incident where a police officer had to shoot an attacker 8 times with modern .45 Hydrashock self defense rounds to kill and stop the attack. When talking about pistols, shot placement is far more important than caliber or bullet design. 9mm is the easiest of these calibers to shoot multiple rounds quickly (for most of us - if you can dump 6 rounds of .40 into a man sized target at 10 yards in 2s from a draw, more power to ya! For us mere mortals, that's a bit beyond our ability).

I've heard a saying that you don't want to take a pistol to a gun fight, you want to take a rifle. An AR-15 is a serious amount of firepower for home defense...with the right kind of ammo. AR-15's are easy to shoot well. They aren't heavy, they have light recoil, and most are very reliable. For those of us in free states, 30rnds of rifle ammo offers plenty of firepower. A good AR-15, while more expensive than the pistols I mentioned, doesn't have to cost and arm and a leg and would certainly be cheaper than an AA-12.

Suppressors/Silencers: In a home defense scenario, it is unlikely you'll have time to put on hearing protection. Firing an AA-12 indoors will make you deaf. Firing an AR-15 will be harmful. 9mm, yeah it'd be harmful but not as much as the long guns. If your area permits it, suppressors/silencers are great for home defense. Make no mistake, a suppressed 9mm pistol or rifle is still mighty loud but is typically at or right above the dangerous levels that will permanently harm your hearing. If you use subsonic ammo this can be reduced even further. (I would still want to wearing hearing protection while firing a suppressed 9mm in-doors).

Dogs! Dogs are great for home protection. They're like little alarm systems that you can cuddle with. How cute is that?

I don't own a shotgun, but I have a few of the other guns mentioned here and these are my preferences. Do I keep a loaded AR-15 next to my bed? No. Do I keep a pistol near my bed? Maybe...

The problem is they run ~$1400 and that's a hard thing to justify putting at the end of a $150 shotgun like I own Smile

My personal defense setup is a Glock 9mm in a quick-access safe next to my bed. In the nearby master closet is my full-size safe where I keep a Mossberg 500 12ga with 18" barrel.

I'm not pro by any means, but I try to keep up basic skills needed for a home defense situation. Both guns are relatively cheap to shoot and so I strive to send plenty of lead out of each. When home alone I take opportunities to practice clearing my home so I understand what I can reasonable expect to accomplish with either firearm. I also have a backyard gun range where I practice draw/acquire/fire drills at distances of 7' to 20' In such cases I'm looking to get my shots in chest-sized area, which for me is more realistic than a quarter-sized group lol.

Obviously the "best" gun will always come down to the person using it. In the end you need a well-practiced and familiar weapon...because when you hear that crash in the middle of the night there is no time to fumbling around Shocked
