Christie Jones recently explained to a local reporter that she likes to practice shooting with her eyes closed because “… chances are, if somebody attacks you, it’s going to be in the night.”

“I don’t change clothes, I don’t change glasses, um, I often shoot one-handed, I often shoot with my eyes closed,” she said.

After shooting multiple times at a target, Jones managed to hit the target once in the shoulder, before admitting “That’s a problem at thirty yards.”

Firearm Safety Rules:
Jeff Cooper wrote:

1. All guns are always loaded.

Shooting with your eyes closed would definitely break rule 4 and most likely rule 3. There are a lot of firearm instructors who have written that you should train how you're going to fight. So for me, joe civilian, training in body armor doesn't make a lot of sense as I'm most likely going to be in street clothes in a gun fight.
So how many places in American are there that are in absolute darkness?
So either Mrs. Jones had taken some firearms advice out of context, or she is still not used to the limelight. A lot of people say stupid shit once they're thrust into the public's eye.

Wabbit is spot on here.

I guess if a person really wanted to get a feel for real night shooting they should arrange a special visit to an outdoor range at night (or indoor with lights off).

The human eye is surprisingly good at seeing stuff in very low light. Even the outline of a target is better than zero vision! So unless she plans to engage targets inside a cave (bad idea for even more reasons) closing her eyes is robbing her of some vital information she should use for properly using her firearm.

This does get me thinking though - I should do some night shooting in my backyard range Smile
