LOL WTF
I don't get it.
Alabama is in imminent danger of adopting sharia laws or something?!?!
This just seems blatantly stupid, ignorant and hateful for no reason other than fear of something that will not and could not ever happen? _________________ [MTL]Mortis - "No one says you have to fight a war with your pants on..."

You do understand that Sharia law is used in America? A quick google search would inform you... |

Never say never, it can always happen when the public goes to sleep and doesn't act.
Australia is a perfect example as well as the UK of what happens when the public falls asleep and allows radicals to take away their rights. |

Except there are repeated cases of American judges deferring to sharia law. |

Yes, and used in the same context as those cited for following hassidic laws or christian ones. Not in the context of a "law" but a religious system of belief. Considering someone's belief system is not enshrining it into law or enforcing it.
The constitution of the United States as well as every state constitution already prohibits the implementation of religious laws, irregardless of the origin of the faith. Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Sikh, etc...
This sort of thing is fear mongering of the worst sort and a solution to a problem than does not, and cannot exist. _________________ [MTL]Mortis - "No one says you have to fight a war with your pants on..."

Here's a pro piece on Sharia law and why this lawyer is thankful it has been and is still being used.
http://www.thenation.com/article/168378/true-story-sharia-american-courts
Considering an outside source OTHER than the written law IS using and adhering to Shariah law.
You would be terrified to go to court with someone and because they adhere to different values invoke different rules apply to them. That's not how our country works. We have a written standard that is to be followed. There isn't wiggle room, there aren't exceptions. |

I wouldn't be scared at all. There is no case of, and never could be, a court following the laws of a religion or foreign country that contravene the laws of the country where the case is being heard.
The case you're citing isn't so much adhering to Shariah law as it is enforcing a marriage contract. It's no different than all the other marriage contracts and prenups that exist for a lot of other americans.
It was actually quite enlightening to see that the courts have some semblance of common sense when hearing cases. The laws are written in black and white, but people aren't. We're all in different shades of grey, and things are mutable and every circumstance is different. _________________ [MTL]Mortis - "No one says you have to fight a war with your pants on..."
